Let's talk about Heartworm Disease

Definition: Heartworm disease is the clinical manifestation of infestation with the Dirofilaria immitis, an intravascular parasite that resides in the pulmonary arteries and right side of the heart.

Epidemiology: Canids primary, low prevalence in cats. Gulf of America and Atlantic coastlines are endemic areas.

Signs and symptoms: depending on the stage of the disease you might see from no signs to cough, exercise intolerance, abdominal distention and collapse.

Diagnosis: Heartworm test, usually done as part of yearly exams. Blood smears microfilaria test. Echocardiography for moderate to severe cases.

Prevention: Our Veterinarians and staff recommend year round heartworm prevention. Monthly tables and topicals are popular but there is also injectables.
